Vanguard Alta Pro 3X – first “no” center column tripod from Vanguard

Vanguard produces some of the best tripods for photographers, and they just announced new additions to their pro-level lineup, with the Alta Pro 3X, Alta Pro 3 tripod series and a new Arca-Swiss compatible LBP-S ball head.

The Alta Pro 3X is Vanguard’s first tripod with “no” central column. The ball head is attached straight on top of the legs. And while there’s a separate central column available for extra height, just like the ball head it goes right on top of the legs. It weighs 1685g and features 30mm carbon fibre legs. The four leg sections extend to 150cm, while with the centre column attached the maximum height is 182cm. It has a 25kg payload and is able to get you as low as 17.5cm without needing a low angle adaptor.

As a more traditional tripod design, we get the Alta Pro 3 with a hexagonal central column. The legs are constructed of three sections, and here you can choose between a slimmer 26mm legged version with a 20kg payload and 1655g weight, or if you need the heftier tripod for those windy mountain tops, the 30mm leg version weighing 2005g and supporting up to 25kg of kit, could be your choice. £350/£400

All tripods in both series are equipped with a new LBP-S series Arca-Swiss compatible ball head. It features dual-axis adjustment and a friction control lock for maximum control, especially for longer lenses. There are four different options available, depending on payload between 15kg and 30kg.

Vanguard is an excellent choice for landscape and wildlife photographers who need support for long and heavy lenses as well as looking for extra stability outdoors on rugged terrain. The Alta Pro 3X is available for £350, while the Alta 3 retails for £300/£400 depending on size. The LBP-S ball comes in four different sizes and costs between £100-£160, depending on payload.
