Around the same time last year, Zeiss announced the big return of its famous Otus lenses, with a 50mm and 85mm lens updated for full-frame mirrorless mounts. Fast forward to today, a third, 35mm f/1.4 ML version hits the shelves to round out the lineup.
Zeiss Otus ML 35mm f/1.4 ML at a glance:
- Price: $2,299
- Min. focusing distance: 30cm
- Construction: 15 elements in 11 groups
- Filter thread: M67 x 0.75
- Lens mount: Sony E, Canon RF, Nikon Z
- Dimensions: 77mm x 116mm (Z-mount)

35mm is a truly versatile focal length ideal for a range of genres like street, documentary, travel photography or environmental portraiture, and the list goes on. With a large aperture, just like the rest of the lenses in the ML series, the 35mm f/1.4 ML is well suited for low-light photography, with the name ‘Otus’ actually referring to a genus of owls famous for their excellent eyesight – so night shots and astro photography won’t be off the table either.
With 10 diaphragm blades and a fast aperture, it creates an extraordinary depth of field and perfectly rounded bokeh. Furthermore, it benefits from an aspherical design, which ensures consistent image quality throughout the focusing range, reduces spherical aberration and maintains sharpness all the way to the peripheries of the image.
Similarly to the older DSLR versions, the new ML series is manual focus only, with a long focus throw to aid precise adjustment. It also lets you focus as close as 30cm, which opens up possibilities for close-ups. Zeiss also wanted to appeal to video shooters and employed an interesting solution where the focus ring can be de-clicked using a special tool to adjust a screw on the bayonet mount.
The all-metal construction with weather sealing has a sleek, modern look accented with the aperture and depth-of-field scales in yellow. But this sturdy build also means it is on the heavy side, weighing between 698 and 737g, depending on the lens mount.
The Zeiss Otus 35mm f/1.4 ML will be available in three major mounts for full-frame Sony E, Canon RF and Nikon Z from April 2026 for $2,299 in the US, with pricing for other territories to follow.
