For many years I just didn’t really get the appeal of folding phones, they seemed like clunky, awkwardly designed phones (Google Pixel Fold – I’m looking at you), with fragile screens, and ended up larger than normal phones, and in addition to that, the cameras were worse than regular flagship phones. This all changed this year, for me anyway, with the Fold 7, which feels smaller than a flagship phone when folded, and the screen is simply a pleasure to look at.
More importantly, the camera system on the Fold 7 phone has been massively upgraded compared to the Fold 6. A 200MP main camera that’s the same as the flagship S25 Ultra, a 3x telephoto camera that’s the same as the S25/Plus, and an ultra-wide-angle camera with auto-focus, so it can take macro photos!
I’ve often baulked at the price of flagship phones, and folding phones are the most expensive you can get, but with the Fold7 it really feels like a premium product, almost justifying the high price.

You can use the phone folded, and it feels like a regular phone, with a great 6.5inch screen, then open it up when you want to do some browsing or view your photos in glorious detail. And the colours look amazing, really very nice.
I also found other benefits of the large screen that I hadn’t thought of before – video editing – video editing on a phone can be pretty awkward, even with a largeish 6.8inch screen. But on the Z Fold7, even though it doesn’t sound that much bigger, due to the almost square aspect ratio the 8inch screen is seriously useful.
So, if you’re serious about using your phone for video recording, and editing on the same device, then a folding phone suddenly becomes seriously useful. Now, where did I put my wallet?
