It’s a new year, and a great opportunity to discover the joys of drones. Many photographers, particularly landscape and architectural specialists, use drones alongside their ‘main’ camera, as drones have got cheaper and much easier to use.
Sponsored. The popularity of drones is soaring, largely driven by hobbyists taking photos and video (85% of the market). By mid-2025, there were more than 500,000 drone pilots operating in the UK, and this number is only going to increase as higher quality drones become available at lower prices.
A good example of a budget drone that delivers great results is the Ruko U11MINI 4K (RC3). This beginner-friendly drone is a sub-250g model that will tick a lot of boxes for aspiring pilots.
The weight is important, because drones with a camera but below that weight limit only require basic training and a free Flyer ID registration with the Civil Aviation Authority, rather than a paid-for Operator ID.
Ruko U11MINI 4K key features
This drone can capture 4K/30fps video and richly detailed 48MP photos, so you will really get the most from the flying time. As a compact, sub-250g drone, the U11MINI 4K’s small size and foldable design means that it will never be a chore to carry around.
You don’t need to worry about running out of power, either. The U11MINI 4K (RC3) includes two batteries, delivering up 64 minutes of flight time. PD 3.0 charging then ensures that you’re not kept grounded by flat batteries for long.
Despite its straightforward design, the build quality is solid, and the controls are responsive. The controller itself is comfortable to hold, while the control sticks can be tucked away to prevent damage during storage or transport.
The controller also auto-connects to the drone at startup. With this screen controller, you don’t need to depend on your phone to watch the live view, avoiding pitfalls such as overheating that can ruin an otherwise perfect flight, eliminating potential mobile pairing issues and complicated setup steps.
And the screen controller’s built-in power supply and processing system ensure more stable signal transmission, avoiding problems like phone overheating, lagging, or low battery. See the YouTube video below.
More about the camera
The camera features a 48MP 1/2-inch CMOS sensor and a fixed f/1.8 lens, capable of capturing 8K (8000x6000px) photos in JPEG format. For video, you can shoot in 4K at 30fps or 1080p at 60fps.
Simply insert a SD card into the drone’s card slot to store 4K videos and photos before your flight (there is support for 32GB – 256GB SD cards). Videos and photos stored in the card are 4K. The camera is mostly automatic, so you won’t need to manually adjust ISO – just get on with shooting and having fun.

Beginner friendly
For beginners, the Ruko U11MINI 4K is a nice balance of simplicity and capability. Its return to home function can be triggered manually or automatically when the battery gets low or if the connection with the controller is lost.
A control range of up to 20,000ft – six kilometres or 3.78 miles – means the U11MINI 4K can fly farther away from its controller without losing this connection. You can even set a new home point if you move to a different location mid-flight, a feature that’s becoming more common in drones today.
Other useful features include GPS follow me for tracking subjects as they move, the ability to program waypoints to give the drone a set path to follow, potentially repeating the same flight multiple times if needed.
The point of interest feature sees the drone circle a designated target at a set radius and altitude, ideal for panoramic views. The three-axis gimbal helps keep the footage smooth, while an AI-powered takeoff and landing system makes tricky manoeuvres a breeze.
The Ruko U11MINI 4K (RC3) drone offers exceptional aerial performance and safe and stable flight, and is available for just $259.99 on the official website with discounts on the company’s Amazon page, too.
