Apple revealed today the new iPhone 17e, the latest version of its affordable smartphone. The 17e features a single 48MP f/1.6 rear camera and a 12MP f/1.9 selfie camera. On the surface, the same specs as the previous model. The 17e promises improved portrait performance and subject recognition, as well as 4k60p video capture, and stabilised Action mode.

The 48MP wide-angle main camera offers a 2x optical-quality zoom, which helps you zoom in a little more. Apple hints at an improved portrait mode that delivers a more natural depth of field and smoother bokeh effect. One issue that stood out while testing the previous iPhone 16e version was that it didn’t recognise dogs. The new 17e recognises people, dogs, and cats, and automatically saves depth information, so you can turn regular photos into portraits with a blur effect after they were taken.

Recognising that storage is paramount, the 17e doubled up and offers 256GB, up from only 128GB. Although Apple doesn’t officially disclose their battery sizes, it states that the 17e would charge up to 50% in around 30 minutes, and supports 15W wireless charging.

We get the same aerospace-grade aluminium design as in the rest of the 17 series, as well as the Ceramic Shield 2 front cover. It comes in three matte finishes: black, white, and a beautiful new soft pink. Available to pre-order from 4 March for £599, with the handset coming to stores from 11 March next week.
