A new collection shows off the hidden beauty of domestic fowl – it’s a book you never knew you needed, but you absolutely do
I can’t say I ever imagined that I’d be covering a book of chicken photography, but we do live in strange times.
These gloriously special pictures celebrate the common domestic chicken, something I hadn’t quite appreciated the beauty of until I came across this book. Now I’ll never look at one in the same way again (not that I spend an awful time looking at chickens, admittedly).
As well as the stunning portraits – and I do mean stunning – the book explores themes of biodiversity, sustainability and a growing trend for keeping your own chickens. Apparently, it’s the latest celebrity trend, becoming a new object of desire, to keep your own chicken. My dog is obviously so last year.
I’ve learned many interesting things about chickens thanks to this book – just to give you a taster, chickens can see a much broader spectrum of colours than humans, and can see in much higher resolution. Seems like they’d make the perfect camera reviewers, but I’m not convinced they’d be able to type as well as the average contributor to this site. Then again I could be wrong about that.

In the book there are over 100 breeds of chickens shown (again, who knew?). Each of the portraits is astonishing, being beautiful, dramatic and just a little bit cheeky.
This is almost certainly the best book about chickens you’ll ever own – and even if until now you had no idea you needed this, I implore you to consider adding it to your shelf, you won’t regret it.
