Towards the end of last year, Amateur Photographer teamed up with leading Android smartphone maker HONOR to organise the free-to-enter HONOR Night Photographer of the Year competition.

Sponsored. Entrants were invited to send in night and low-light images taken on any capture device (camera or phone), and from this we drew up a shortlist of six photographers.

These six photographers were then sent HONOR’s latest flagship phone, the HONOR Magic8 Pro, to take more night and low-light shots with this powerful new model – which is particularly strong when it comes to night telephoto performance.

After receiving an impressive number of high-quality entries from all over the UK and Ireland, we are now pleased to announce that Ming Cheng from London has been named overall winner of the HONOR Night Photographer of the Year contest.

For his prize, Ming gets the HONOR Magic8 Pro phone to keep, as well as a city break to Barcelona from February 28th to March 3rd, where he will be HONOR’s guest at the massive Mobile World Congress show on March 2nd.

Ming is also our guest at the glittering Amateur Photographer Awards in London on February 26th, where he will receive a trophy from Amateur Photographer editor, Nigel Atherton.

‘As part of the judging team, I was really impressed by the standard of low-light and night photographs entered into this unique competition,’ said AP Editor Nigel Atherton. ‘This is despite the grim weather we have been having recently in the UK and Ireland – so well done all.’

Making an exhibition of themselves

The overall winning image, plus a selection of shortlisted and highly commended images, will be exhibited at the Amateur Photographer Awards at the Bloomsbury Ballroom in central London at the end of this month. You can also enjoy them below…

About

I am the deputy editor of Amateur Photographer, working closely with the team to make the website and magazine as good as possible. I've been working on magazines since 1995 and am also a keen travel and portrait photographer when time allows, reaching the finals of the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year contest in 2015 and achieving my Licentiate from the Royal Photographic Society the year before. I also keep my wedding-photography hand in by shooting a few ceremonies a year. I am particularly interested in how photography can help people express their creativity more effectively, or deal with mental health issues and other challenges.
