Another DSLR disappears from the market, and this time it’s a big one

Canon 5D Mark IV with Canon 24-70 f/2.8 lens

The 5D Mark IV is the sixth model in the EOS 5D-series. It carries on where the EOS 5D Mark III left off

We recently reported that there were only 7 DSLRs left on the market available to buy new, well, for those thinking of buying a new DSLR, the news just got worse, as one of the big DSLRs just entered the “officially discontinued” section of the Canon Japan website. The camera in question is the full-frame Canon EOS 5D Mark IV – a ground-breaking DSLR when introduced, but now all but superseded by Canon’s mirrorless cameras.

If you currently use a 5D Mark IV professionally and plan on continuing to use one, then you might want to find one to buy sooner rather than later, as retailer stocks are likely to run out, with no replenishment plans. Of course, you might also want to think about switching to mirrorless cameras for future proofing. The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV was originally announced in August 2016 – so the camera is both nearly 10 years old – but also quite advanced for the time, with a 30MP full-frame sensor, 4K video recording, and built-in Wi-Fi, NFC, and GPS.

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV at a glance:

  • 30.4-million-pixel full-frame CMOS sensor
  • Dual DIGIC 6 & DIGIC 6+ processors
  • ISO 100-32,000 (expandable to ISO 50-102,400)
  • 7fps continuous shooting
  • 61-point AF system with 41 cross-type
  • 3.2in, 1,620k-dot touchscreen
  • DCI 4K 30fps video recording
  • Built-in Wi-fi, NFC and GPS

As the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV has been out for nearly 10 years now, you’ll find a huge range of them available on the second-hand market, meaning you can take your pick, from retailers like MPB.com, Park Cameras, WEX, and others. You’ll also find a range of lenses available, with big savings to be found on the used market. For some, the long battery life, and chunky DSLR handling will be a familiar friend compared to smaller mirrorless cameras. *via CR.
